That Boutique-y’s North British 35 Year Old is an independent, limited-edition bottling of long-aged grain spirit from the North British Distillery (Edinburgh). North British is a famed grain distillery whose light, creamy spirit is often used in premium blends — when bottled as a single grain and given 30+ years in oak it develops unusual richness and complexity. TBWC typically packages such releases in a small outturn with their comic-style label and bottles them at a slightly elevated strength to show the liquid’s character.
Tasting Notes
COLOR:
Deep gold — warm mahogany highlights from long oak contact.
NOSE:
Polished oak, warm honey, marzipan and almond paste; candied orange peel and yellow apple; delicate vanilla pod, a whisper of toffee and caramel; old leather, beeswax and a faint floral perfume. With time: polished cedar, subtle tobacco leaf and a light nutmeg/ginger spice.
TASTE:
Silky, oily mouthfeel (grain whiskies that long-aged often feel velvety). Concentrated toffee and crème brûlée, dried apricot and sultana, marzipan, honeycomb and a balanced oak tannin backbone. Hints of baking spice, dark chocolate shavings and candied citrus. Very refined — oak gives structure rather than overwhelms.
FINISH:
Long, dry-sweet finish — oak spice and cocoa dust lingering with a last bright citrus oil note and a faint smokey/peatless woodsmoke reminiscence. Clean, warming, contemplative.
